What is Internet Control and how does it work?
The PaperCut Internet Control module makes use of your organization's
existing web proxy to track user Internet usage. PaperCut
processes the proxy log files, calculating the amount of
usage and charges the users based on costs you define. Costs
can be calculated based on the amount of data downloaded
or the amount of time used.
Once the user has no credit available, PaperCut will deny
the user access to the Internet by integrating with the proxy's
access control rules.
Is the Internet Control release beta quality software?
PaperCut has been around for 7 years now. This release includes
all the print monitoring features of the latest versions
of PaperCut and is therefore very stable and proven. The
Internet control module has been ported from PaperCut Quota,
so is based on well proven technology. We're asking for testers
to help test the installation and setup process and new functionality
like the improved Squid proxy integration.
I'm an existing PaperCut NG user. Can I help test
the Internet Control module release?
Yes. If you are running one of the proxy servers listed
below you will be able to test right now. Contact support@papercut.biz for
advice on setting up PaperCut in this scenario.
If you have any questions about setting up the Internet
Control module on your network, please contact us at support@papercut.biz for
assistance.
What proxies are supported?
PaperCut NG supports the following proxies:
- Microsoft ISA Server 2000/2004/2006
- Squid Proxy (on Linux or Windows)
- Microsoft Proxy Server Version 2.0
- FreeProxy
- Any other proxy server that generates W3C compliant log
files
Tell me about the testing program
During the next few weeks we'll be asking network administrators
to download and try PaperCut NG Internet Control module.
We're looking for feedback on areas such as:
- Bugs or problems
- Making the setup process as simple as possible
- Ideas and potential new features
Organizations participating in the testing program who submit
feedback will receive:
- A free license allowing you to run the software for two
months (if required).
- A 50% discount on final purchase.
The development team will also hand out a number of free
licenses to the most helpful testers.
I'm already using the Print Control module, can
I also test the Internet Control module?
Yes! The Internet Control module functionality is built
into the PaperCut NG application server. So one installation
of PaperCut can perform both print and Internet control.
Whilst evaluating and testing the Internet control module,
we recommend you install it on to a separate server from
your primary print server. This allows you to evaluate the
product without interrupting your print monitoring.
If you have any questions regarding the best way to deploy
the Internet Charging module please contact support.
How to I track changes/updates made during the testing
program?
Matt will be maintaining a list of changes and discussion
topics in the PaperCut Developer blog.
Are there any known issues with the current release?
There are no known issues with the current release, however
we will be making some functionality improvements before
the final release of the Internet Control module.
Please let us know if you find any issues, or have any suggested
improvements!
How do I install it?
The first place to start is the quick start guide for Windows or Linux.
Please have a quick read before installing.
Once PaperCut NG is installed and the Internet Control module
is enabled, the Internet Control service needs to be configured.
This service is responsible for monitoring the proxy log
files. This is described in the the Internet
Control section of the manual. It is important to read
this part of the manual because it describes:
- How the Internet Control module works.
- How to configure the Internet proxy.
- How to configure the PaperCut Internet Control service.
I have another question. How do I get in touch with
the developers?
Send through an email to support.
Matt heads up the Internet Control development and he'll
be more than happy to help with any questions. |
